The Department of Classical and Near Eastern Studies in the College of Liberal Arts at the University of Minnesota invites applications for the Sundet Family Chair in New Testament and Christian Studies.
The Sundet Family Chair in New Testament and Christian Studies will bring national renown to Religious Studies at the University of Minnesota, and enrichment to the Christian community and to the community at large. The Sundet Family Chair will have New Testament as a primary area of teaching and research, but will have training and interest in the history of Christianity sufficient to both teach courses in Christian religious traditions, and be a leader in the guidance of Religious Studies at the University.
The Department of Classical and Near Eastern Studies seeks to appoint a scholar and teacher to begin fall semester 2013 (08/26/2013) or spring semester 2014 (01/09/2014). Appointment will be 100% time over the nine-month academic year (late-August to late-May), and will be made at the rank of tenure-track assistant professor, tenured associate professor, or tenured professor, depending on the appointee's qualifications and experience, and consistent with collegiate and University policy.
The successful candidate's area of specialization within the field of
New Testament and early Christian studies is open, though an ability to
contribute to our broad curriculum in ancient Mediterranean studies is
expected. The Sundet Chair plays a key role in the department's thriving
M.A. program in Religions in Antiquity and participates in the
University's recently introduced interdepartmental Program in Religious
Studies.
Responsibilities include the active pursuit of a program of research
and publication, undergraduate and graduate teaching and advising
(including one or more courses on the New Testament), and service to the
department and university.
To be considered for the Sundet Family Chair in New Testament and Christian Studies at the tenure-track assistant professor level, applicants must hold the Ph.D. or equivalent terminal degree in a field closely related to Classical and Near Eastern Studies, and show exceptional promise as a scholar and teacher at a major research university. Excellent skills in ancient Greek and other appropriate research languages are required.
To be considered for the Sundet Family Chair in New Testament and
Christian Studies at the tenured associate professor level or tenured
professor level, applicants must hold the Ph.D. or equivalent terminal
degree in a field closely related to Classical and Near Eastern Studies,
and possess a distinguished record of academic achievement (scholarly
research, teaching, service) that satisfies the criteria for holding an
appointment with indefinite tenure in the Department of Classical and
Near Eastern Studies at the University of Minnesota. Excellent skills in
ancient Greek and other appropriate research languages are required.
Candidates will be evaluated according to the overall quality of
their academic preparation and scholarly work, evidence of research
ability, evidence of commitment to teaching and skills as a teacher, and
strength of recommendations.
The mission of the Department of Classical and Near Eastern Studies is to produce and disseminate knowledge about the
civilizations of the ancient Mediterranean and Near East from the
Neolithic period through late antiquity.
The faculty of the Department of
Classical and Near Eastern Studies conduct research and teach courses in
the languages and literatures of Greece, Rome, and the Near East
(including Modern Hebrew); and the art, history, and religious
traditions of these civilizations, including the development of early
Judaism and Christianity.
The Department of Classical and Near
Eastern Studies offers majors in Greek, Hebrew, Latin, and Ancient
Mediterranean Studies. CNES is also the administrative home of the
programs in Religious Studies and Classical Civilization.
