You must be admitted to both the Graduate School of the University of Minnesota and to the disciplinary department of your intended major. Apply to the Graduate School online. Apply to the Department of Classical and Near Eastern Studies using this form. Please e-mail to Kate Gallagher at kmg@umn.edu or follow the mailing instructions on the application.
You may apply either for the M.A. or the Ph.D.; Ph.D. applicants are occasionally admitted to the M.A. instead. The M.A. is considered a terminal degree, but students who complete it can (and often do) petition to continue into the Ph.D. In such cases, most of the work completed for the M.A. can generally be rolled over into the Ph.D. program.
CNES is not accepting applications for the program in Ancient and Medieval Art and Archaeology (M.A. or Ph.D.) for the foreseeable future.
Classical and Near Eastern Studies requires a recent (within the last 5 years) GRE; be sure to arrange to take the test well in advance of the admissions deadlines. GRE scores are considered along with many other criteria to assess a candidate’s fitness for graduate work; there is no set minimum score.
If your native language is not English you should arrange to take the TOEFL test.
Must be submitted with the application.
All application materials must be received by January 3, 2012 for full consideration for Fall 2012 admission.
